2021 Verification of Voter Checklist

On June 24, 2021, the Supervisors of the Voter Checklist met to review a list of voters who have not voted in Lebanon within the past four years. After review, letters were mailed by the City Clerk’s Office to those voters whose names appeared on the list. This page is additional information regarding the information that appeared in the letter and what to do if you have received one.

If you do not find the information you are seeking from this page, please contact our office during regular business hours at 603-448-3054. You may also send an inquiry by email to cityclerk@lebanonnh.gov.

Why is the voter checklist being verified?

In accordance with NH RSA 654:39, every ten years the supervisors of the checklist in each city and town in the State of New Hampshire are required to conduct a verification of the voter checklist.

Voting laws specify how many voting booths must be available at the polls based on the number of voters on the voter checklist. Removing voters who no longer live in Lebanon will allow the City of Lebanon to meet those guidelines without having to unnecessarily purchase additional voting booths or expand the size of our polling locations.

In addition, numbers used to calculate voter turnout are based on the number of voters on the voter checklist and how many of them participated in an election. Voter turnout is important to help predict the amount of staffing needed to help our polling locations operate smoothly.

Who will be removed from the Lebanon Voter Checklist?

Only voters who have not voted for the past four years AND had a registration date that was on or before November 3, 2020, will be removed from the Lebanon Voter Checklist. If you registered to vote from November 4, 2020, to the present but have not yet participated in an election, you will not be removed from the checklist. (If you did register to vote during that time frame and you received a letter, please contact our office immediately.)

What should I do if I receive a letter?

If you receive a letter and wish to remain on the voter checklist, you will need to re-register to vote. If you do not respond by the deadline, you will be removed from our voter checklist.

Applicants for registration will need to complete a new Voter Registration Form. If you possess proof of identity, age, citizenship, and domicile please bring that proof when you come to register. If you do not possess proof OR bring proof, you may still register if you sign an affidavit attesting to your qualifications for identity, age, citizenship and/or domicile.

For more information regarding acceptable proof of identity, age, citizenship and/or domicile, please consult our voter registration page. You can also contact our office with questions.

When can I re-register?

1. In-person at the City Clerk’s Office (Monday through Thursday, 7:00am to 5:00pm. We are closed on Friday.)

2. In-person at the Supervisor of the Checklist Session to be held August 10, 2021, at City Hall from 6:00PM to 6:30PM

At this time, we are not permitted by the Secretary of State’s Office to accept voter registration through the mail. If you are not able to appear in-person, you may contact our office for further information.

Have you received a letter but you no longer live in Lebanon or West Lebanon?

You can simply disregard the notice and you will automatically be removed from the Lebanon Voter Checklist after August 10, 2021. Please note, this notice only effects your record with the City of Lebanon. If you have registered to vote in your current community, this letter will not affect your status as a voter there.

I received a letter, but I have voted in the last four years. What should I do?

If you have voted in Lebanon within the last four years and you received the letter, please contact our office immediately. Please have your letter at hand, as we may have questions regarding the name or address to which it was sent. It is also helpful to our research if you can tell us which election you last participated in and if you voted by absentee or in-person at your ward. We will conduct research of our marked voter checklists and absentee balloting records.

If we find that you have voted in the past four years, you will not be removed from the voter checklist. If we cannot find that you have voted in the last four years, you will need to re-register to vote by August 10, 2021. (Please keep in mind, all situations are different and additional paperwork may be required.)

I received a letter but it references my previous name. How do I correct that?

If you still reside in Lebanon or West Lebanon, please contact our office. We will ask for your previous name and your current name to verify that it is not a duplicate file. Please keep in mind, you may still need to re-register OR complete a name change form.

If you no longer reside in Lebanon or West Lebanon, you do not need to take any action. You will automatically be removed from the Lebanon Voter Checklist after August 10, 2021.

I received a letter but it was sent to my previous address. How do I correct my address?

If you still reside in Lebanon or West Lebanon, you will need to re-register to vote.

If you no longer reside in Lebanon or West Lebanon, you do not need to take any action. You will automatically be removed from the Lebanon Voter Checklist after August 10, 2021.

Did you receive a letter for someone else at your address?

More than likely, this was a previous occupant of your address and that person was a registered voter at one time. The recommended procedure for this situation is to simply write “Return to sender – not at this address” and place the unopened letter back in the mail. The post office will return it to us. There is no need to contact our office to notify us that the person no longer lives at that address. Regardless of whether the letter makes it back to our office, that voter will be removed from the checklist after August 10, 2021.

Did you receive a letter for a deceased individual?

There is no need to contact our office or to return the letter. The person's name will be removed automatically from our checklist after August 10, 2021.
